Pop Quiz: Fashion or Porn?
The fashion portal nss has seemingly effortlessly made a point that people have been trying to make for years: that fashion advertising sexualizes models as much as porn does. Fashion has faced its share of backlash for this, but nowhere near as much as the adult industry has. One has to wonder how many fashion magazines with such imagery keep copies of models’ IDs in order to comply with 2257 regulations. (I’m not saying they should — I think the 2257 regulation requirements create a broken system that unnecessarily exposes performers to risk.)
In any event, nss mag has a fun little quiz called Fashion or Porn, where you’ll be served small sections of a larger image and asked to determine whether it’s a fashion ad or a porn still. Do not do this at work or around anyone that hasn’t explicitly stated they want to see sexual imagery! Once you make a guess, the site fills in the rest of the image, resulting in a monitor full of sex — or at the very least, the suggestion of sex.
Just so you know, I watch a lot of porn and I was surprised I couldn’t get even 20 out of 40 right on this thing. I’m not the only one — over at Refinery29, Gabriel Bell, a tireless consumer of fashion imagery, found it impossible to get a perfect score as well.
Should make for a fun drinking game.
