Tom Wolfe Thinks Sex is Getting “Out of Hand”
Ah, the Norman Mailer Center and Writers Colony gala, where the icons of New Journalism come together to celebrate Jann Wenner, Gay Talese, Tom Wolfe were all in attendance. As was The Observer‘s Nat Freeman, who wasted no time asking Wolfe his thoughts on the Duke University fuck list.
Wolfe’s daughter, you see, attended Duke and served as something of an inspiration for Wolfe’s novel I Am Charlotte Simmons (which, if you may remember, won a Literary Review Bad Sex Award in 2004).
“Have you heard about a certain Power Point presentation associated with Duke University that’s come out recently?” the Observer journo asked the iconic man in the white suit.
“I don’t know about it really,” he said when we asked for his take on the whole scandal that erupted after Deadspin posted the Duke girl’s “thesis” that she “researched” by sleeping with athletes. “But it’s another sign that sex is getting out of hand. When girls started volunteering their identity as Tiger Woods’ girlfriendsâ€â€they’re still popping up. On the cover of the New York Post today there was another one!”
Their conclusion? That Wolfe went “I Am Charlotte Simmons” on the Duke Fuck list. Classy!
